Paintball questions
Everything you'll want to know before your first mission — safety, kit and how the game works.
01Is paintball safe?
As with any sport or activity, injuries can happen. But standard safety rules and approved equipment make paintball one of the safest team games around. Insurance statistics show that more people get hurt bowling or fishing than playing paintball. The golden rule: keep your eye protection on at all times.
02When did paintball start?
The first ever paintball game was played on 27 June 1981 by 12 players using Nel-spot 007 pistols. The first outdoor fields appeared in 1982 and the first indoor one in 1984 — and since then the sport has spread all over the world.
03Is paintball equipment classed as a weapon?
No. Paintball and airsoft markers aren't covered by Romania's Law no. 295/2004 on weapons and ammunition, and no licence or permit is needed.
04Does getting hit hurt?
Honestly? Yes, a little — it's part of the game. The sting is short-lived, a bit like a light knock, and it's gone within seconds. Your protective gear takes most of the edge off.
05What's a paintball made of?
Nothing complicated: a core of coloured liquid inside a gelatine shell. The paint is non-toxic, biodegradable and water-soluble.
06What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes that suit the season — you'll get protective overalls to wear on top. We recommend footwear that supports your ankles, such as walking boots.
07What's a paintball marker, and how does it work?
The marker is the paintball gun — the main piece of kit. It uses expanding gas (carbon dioxide or compressed air) to fire paintballs at a speed kept within safe limits.
08What's a CO2 system?
CO2 can exist as both a liquid and a gas. Used as a propellant, it needs to be filled properly and set to the right pressure for the marker to work at its best.
09What style of game do you recommend?
It depends on how experienced your group is, how many paintballs you've booked and how much time you have. We've got several game styles and scenarios, and the referee will help you choose the right ones for your group.
